Drop D lowers only the sixth string from E to D. It adds a deeper root and allows one-finger power chords across the lowest three strings.

Why use this tuning
Use Drop D for rock, metal, alternative music and fingerstyle pieces in D. Standard chord shapes remain unchanged except when they include the sixth string.
Retune safely
Change one string at a time, approach the target pitch gradually and recheck every string after the neck settles. Large tuning changes may require a different string gauge and a professional setup.
