A minor pentatonic is the most common first soloing scale on guitar. Its five notes fit blues, rock, pop and many minor-key progressions without creating much harmonic friction.

Musical use

How to use this scale

Start with the fifth-position box, target A on strong beats and use C or G for expressive bends. Over a blues in A, add Eb to turn it into the A blues scale.

Practice

A useful exercise

Play the shape in groups of three notes, then improvise using only two adjacent strings. Fewer notes force stronger rhythm and phrasing.
