B Minor Guitar Chord

B minor is the essential minor chord in the keys of D and A. The standard shape introduces a five-string barre without requiring the low E string.

Why this shape works

The second-fret barre supplies the root and top fifth while the other fingers complete the minor triad.

Clean fingering tip

Practise the compact top-four-string shape first, then add the barred A string when the upper notes are clean.

Fix it fast

Common mistake

A straight, flat first finger often leaves the B string muted. Roll the barre slightly and place it close to the second fret.

Check every string

Pick from the lowest included string to the highest. A note should either ring clearly or be deliberately muted. Accidental half-muted strings are what make a chord feel weak.
