A Minor 7 Guitar Chord
Am7 is a relaxed, open minor chord used in soul, funk, jazz and acoustic songwriting. It needs only two fretted notes.

How to play Am7
Why this shape works
The open G adds the flat seventh while the open A and E maintain a wide, resonant foundation.
Clean fingering tip
Think of the shape as A minor with the G string released. Alternate Am and Am7 to hear the added colour.
Common mistake
Do not flatten the second finger onto the open G string. Its note is the feature that makes this an Am7.
Check every string
Pick from the lowest included string to the highest. A note should either ring clearly or be deliberately muted. Accidental half-muted strings are what make a chord feel weak.
